Your air conditioner has one simple job; to blow cold air into your house. That’s why it’s so frustrating to discover your AC not cooling, but don’t worry! In most cases, you can diagnose the issue quickly and get the unit back up and running in no time.

Why Is My AC Not Cooling?

If you have an AC not blowing cold air, it could be due to a serious part breakdown, or it could just be a simple fix you can handle yourself. Start by checking these components to see if you can avoid calling a repair company:

#1 – Tripped Circut Breaker

Circuit breakers contain switches that control the electrical power for rooms and large appliances throughout your home. If the circuit has tripped, it will result in an AC not cold enough.

How Does It Fail?

If your home experiences a power surge, the circuits may shut off. With the breakers tripped, your air conditioner won’t be able to cool.

How to Fix

Circuit breaker boxes are usually found somewhere outside your home. Locate the AC breaker switch, reset it, and try running the cold air again.

#2 – Condenser Unit Needs Maintenance

Most people rarely go outside and take a look at their air conditioner, let alone clean the condenser regularly. If the condenser becomes too dirty or is obstructed, the unit won’t cool.

How Does It Fail?

Everything from leaves to overgrown weeds and grass, not to mention dirt and grime, accumulate over months or years of enduring the elements. This restricts airflow and could explain your AC not cooling.

How to Fix

Clear off any leaves and cut all of the grass or weeds around your AC. Use a wire brush to clean the coils themselves, and try using coil cleaner spray as well for best results.

#3 – Restricted Airflow

Even if your AC unit is running, the air flow it’s producing may be insufficient, or it could be restricted by blockages.

How Does It Fail?

Most airflow issues come down to dirty air filters or ducts. Occasionally though, the problem is due to a faulty AC fan.

How to Fix

Turn on your air conditioner and hold a lighter in front of each vent. Watch the flame and slowly move away to the other side of the room. If the air does not affect the flame at any point, replace your filters.
