If your gas oven won’t light, the problem may be a bad igniter. It’s easy to identify the problem by the repetitive clicking sound. If you hear the clicking sound without the “whoosh” to indicate that the gas has been ignited, your ignitor may need to be replaced.
Another reason for an oven not lighting is a clogged or dirty igniter. To unclog the igniter, remove the grate and the burner cap. Use warm soapy water and a soft cloth to clean the surrounding area. Next, use a straightened paperclip to clean the burner holes.
NOTE: Never use a toothpick to clean the burner holes, as it could break off and clog the burner hole.
When an electric oven won’t heat, the problem may be a broken heating element. First, make sure that the unit has power by checking the digital clock or oven light. If it does, then visually inspect both the upper and lower elements.
Visually inspect the heating elements for cracks or other damage. If you don’t see any damage, try turning the oven on high and inspect the elements while on. The heating elements should glow bright red. If only part of the heating element glows or doesn’t glow, it will most likely need to be replaced.
WARNING! Be certain that the element has cooled before touching.
Ovens typically last an average of 15 years if it is properly cared for. To properly care for your oven and extend its lifespan, perform routine maintenance such as:
- Clean up spills as soon as they happen, and deep clean your oven every three or four months, depending on how often you use it.
- Avoid the self-cleaning option and use oven cleaner or baking soda and vinegar to clean heavy stains instead. The self-cleaning feature uses extremely high temperatures and, after repeated use, can wear out the parts of the oven faster.
