DIY Laundry Booster Ideas

We recently came across a fantastic tip from Janene Suriano Yarborough of Shabby Chic Designs & Decor, and we just had to share it with you! Here in Phoenix, we all know how tough the desert heat can be on our clothes—between sweat, dust, and general wear and tear, keeping laundry fresh can be challenging. But Janene has a solution that’s eco-friendly, non-toxic, and budget-friendly!

She makes her own OxyClean and laundry booster, free of the toxins and irritants found in many store-bought detergents. This homemade mix works wonders on everything from brightness to eliminating stubborn odors. Whether you’re doing small or large loads, this DIY laundry booster is easy to use and highly effective. Plus, it’s approved for your washing machine by your favorite Gilbert appliance repair experts! 😁

How to Store Your DIY Laundry Booster

Before you start mixing up your laundry booster, it’s smart to think about how you’ll store it—or even share it! And trust me, you’ll want to share it. Janene calls herself the “laundry fairy” because friends and family love it so much—they bring back their empty tubs, and she happily refills them!

Here are some practical and stylish ideas:

  • Glass Jars with Wooden Lids: Just like Janene’s setup (pictured below), glass jars with wooden lids are not only functional but also look chic on your laundry room shelf. Glass helps keep the mix dry, while the wooden lid adds a warm, natural touch. Make sure the lid fits snugly to keep moisture out.
  • Airtight Containers: For those who want something a bit more durable, consider using airtight plastic containers. These are especially useful if you have kids or want to avoid any chance of breakage.
  • Recycled Tubs: Following Janene’s lead, you can also repurpose old containers or tubs for an eco-friendly solution. Just clean them out thoroughly before refilling, and you’re good to go! Plus, when friends and family return for a refill, it’s super convenient.
  • Cute Labels: No matter what container you choose, adding labels will make it easy to identify your laundry booster at a glance. You can even get creative with it—add instructions for use or a fun name for your concoction!

Interested in trying it out for yourself? Here’s her simple recipe:

DIY Laundry Booster Recipe:

  • 4 lb box of clean baking soda
  • Half of a 3 lb box of Arm & Hammer laundry booster washing soap
  • 1 cup of pure natural Epsom salt

Mix it all really well, and you’re good to go!

  • For small loads, use one scoop.
  • For large loads, use two scoops.

I’ve started using this in every load, and the difference is incredible. It doesn’t just clean—it gets rid of odors, too. If you have sensitive skin or just want to avoid harsh chemicals, this could be a game-changer.

What’s in the DIY Laundry Booster: Understanding the Ingredients

When making your DIY laundry booster, it’s essential to understand what each ingredient brings to the table, as well as any potential warnings to keep in mind.

  • Baking Soda (4 lb): Baking soda is a natural cleaner and deodorizer, making it perfect for lifting stains and neutralizing odors. It’s gentle on fabrics and skin, making it an excellent choice for sensitive individuals. However, too much baking soda in one load can be abrasive, so stick to the recommended amounts.
  • Arm & Hammer Laundry Booster (Half of a 3 lb box): This laundry booster contains washing soda (sodium carbonate), enhancing your detergent’s cleaning power. It helps break down hard water minerals, making your detergent more effective. Just be cautious with delicate fabrics, as washing soda can be harsh on sensitive materials if overused.
  • Epsom Salt (1 cup): Epsom salt, made of magnesium sulfate, helps soften water and can reduce static cling in your laundry. It’s especially helpful if you live in an area with hard water. However, Epsom salt isn’t a stain remover or cleaning agent, so it’s more of a fabric softener and water conditioner in this mix.

Important Warnings:

  • Skin Sensitivity: While this mixture is generally safe and free from harsh chemicals, some people with very sensitive skin may still experience irritation, especially from the washing soda. If you notice any discomfort, consider reducing the amount used per load.
  • Avoid Ingestion: Though the ingredients are safe for laundry, they are not meant for consumption. Keep your mixture out of reach of children and pets.
  • Storage Caution: Always store your laundry booster in a cool, dry place. Exposure to moisture can cause clumping, which may affect the mix’s effectiveness.

Next time you’re feeling overwhelmed by your laundry pile, try this recipe. Your clothes will be brighter, fresher, and free of unnecessary toxins. Plus, it’s a great way to be a little more eco-conscious!

Big shoutout to Janene for this amazing tip! Let’s keep our homes clean and fresh, the natural way!
