When to Change Your GE Monogram Water Filter

The frequency in changing your GE Monogram water filter depends on how often you use the water dispenser and ice maker. However, on average, you should replace it every six months. Just like most water filters, refrigerator water filters become less efficient as they fill with minerals and other impurities.

Over time, refrigerator water filters get clogged and restrict water flow to your water dispenser and ice maker. Consequently, this leads to problems like your ice maker not working and smelly ice cubes and water. As these are undesirable problems, we recommend you add replacing the water filter in your GE Monogram Refrigerator to your list of refrigerator maintenance tasks.

How to Change Your GE Monogram Refrigerator Bypass Plug

If you have a household reverse osmosis water system or other housewide water filtration system, you’ll need to use a bypass plug. The bypass plug replaces the water filter since your water is already filtered. GE Monogram Refrigerator water dispensers and ice makers cannot function without this part or a water filter.

To install the bypass plug, use the same steps as replacing the water filter. Simply insert the plug and turn it clockwise until it locks into place. Be sure that you don’t tighten the plug too tight.

Note: Your refrigerator should have included the bypass plug when you purchased it. However, if you don’t have the part, you can order it online here.

How Do You Change a Filter on a Side-By-Side Refrigerator?

To change the water filter in a side-by-side refrigerator, start by locating the filter compartment, usually located inside the refrigerator, either in the back of the top shelf or in the bottom right corner of the unit. Once you have found the filter compartment, twist the old filter counterclockwise to remove it. Take the new filter out of its packaging and remove the plastic caps on both ends. Insert the new filter into the compartment and twist it clockwise until it is securely in place. Close the compartment door and run water through the dispenser for a few minutes to clear any air from the lines and flush the system. It is recommended to replace the water filter every six months to ensure the best tasting and highest quality water and ice.

What Happens if You Don’t Change the Water Filter On Your Refrigerator?

If you don’t change the water filter on your refrigerator, it can become clogged with contaminants and sediment over time. This can reduce the flow of water and ice, and can also lead to the release of unhealthy or unpleasant-tasting contaminants into your water and ice. In addition, a clogged filter can put extra strain on the refrigerator’s water system, potentially leading to leaks or other damage. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for changing the water filter in your refrigerator to ensure that it is functioning properly and providing clean, safe water.
